It runs Auckland's urban passenger trains under contract from Auckland Transport under their MAXX brand, on infrastructure owned and managed by KiwiRail. Auckland Transport receives funding to subsidise these services from the New Zealand Transport Agency, which receives funding from road user taxes and Crown appropriations, and from the Auckland Council through rates.

- Eastern Line - along the North Island Main Trunk via Glen Innes, Manurewa and Papakura to Pukekohe;
- Southern Line - along the Auckland-Newmarket Line to Newmarket, then the North Auckland Line to Westfield and the North Island Main Trunk via Manurewa and Papakura to Pukekohe;
- Western Line - along the Auckland-Newmarket Line to Newmarket and the North Auckland Line via Henderson to Waitakere.
- Onehunga Line - follows the Southern Line (North Auckland Line) to Penrose then the Onehunga Branch to Onehunga
Rolling stock
Veolia operates the following rolling stock:-
- 9 ADK/ADB class two-car DMUs (ex Transperth), owned by ARTA, operated in pairs;
- 10 ADL/ADC class two-car DMUs (ex Transperth), owned by ARTA;
- 3 DBR class locomotives, owned by KiwiRail, operating in top-and-tail mode with one five-car SX set (ex Brisbane), owned by ARTA;
- 20 DC class locomotives, owned by KiwiRail, operating in push-pull mode with 20 sets of 3 or 4 SA cars and an SD driving car with driving cab and remote controls (ex British Rail Mark 2 carriages rebuilt for suburban service), owned by ARTA.[1]
- 4 DFT/DFB class locomotives, owned by KiwiRail. Used in a similar way to the DC class locomotives, using six-car sets (5x SA and 1x SD)
All rolling stock is in MAXX Blue livery, except DC 4104, DC 4346 and DCP 4818, which are in KiwiRail livery.

Previous operator
The previous operator of the train network in Auckland was Tranz Metro. When the Auckland Regional Council called for tenders for the new contract, Tranz Metro did not tender and Connex (later renamed Veolia) won the tender.
Since 2004:
- patronage has increased by 30% annually.
- on-time performance has increased from 50% to 85%.
