History
The settlement is named after
Cambridge inEngland .The town and village named Cambridge were once in
Albany County, New York , but were transferred to Washington County in 1791.The [http://www.cambridgehotel.com/ Cambridge Hotel] , built in 1885, is reputed to be the birth-place of 'pie à la mode'. It re-opened in June 2007 under new ownership, according to "The Chronicle", a weekly newspaper in Glens Falls that covers Washington County extensively. The hotel includes two restaurants, one fine dining and one bistro-tavern. The executive chef currently is Jason Evans.
Cambridge is also home to [http://www.hubbardhall.org/ Hubbard Hall] , an 1878 Victorian Opera House that is now open as community arts center with theatre, music, dance and visual arts classes and performances. Former Broadway actor [http://www.hubbardhall.org/kevin.php Kevin McGuire] serves as the Artistic Director of the theatre group. Kevin McGuire also sings at cabarets at the Cambridge Hotel, with the pianist Richard Cherry.

As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,925 people, 755 households, and 477 families residing in the village. Thepopulation density was 1,151.1 people per square mile (445.1/km²). There were 840 housing units at an average density of 502.3/sq mi (194.2/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.13% White, 0.52% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.26% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.There were 755 households out of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.8% were married couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.8% were non-families. 32.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village the population was spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 81.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.0 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $31,164, and the median income for a family was $41,012. Males had a median income of $31,935 versus $24,453 for females. The
per capita income for the village was $15,919. About 9.4% of families and 12.5% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 15.1% of those under age 18 and 8.0% of those age 65 or over.References
