Bergen a village in Genesee County, New York, United States. The population was 1,240 at the 2000 census.

The Village of Bergen lies on the eastern edge of the Town of Bergen. The village is north of the junction of Routes 19 and 33.

History

The Village of Bergen was incorporated in 1877.

Geography

Bergen is located at coor dms|43|5|0|N|77|56|30|W|city (43.083388, -77.941754)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²).None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,240 people, 466 households, and 317 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,002.3 people per square mile (772.2/km²). There were 477 housing units at an average density of 770.2/sq mi (297.0/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 95.32% White, 0.56% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 0.97% from other races, and 1.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.

There were 466 households out of which 35.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.8% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.23.

In the village the population was spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 32.8% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 103.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $51,016, and the median income for a family was $54,327. Males had a median income of $35,909 versus $26,364 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,689. About 2.2% of families and 3.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.8% of those under age 18 and 7.1% of those age 65 or over.

Within the village limits one business has stood out since 1978. The locals know Ralph & Rosie's as a household name. Famous for its most popular Sweet Sauce and Dollar Slices, the pizzeria and deli has been owned and operated by the Marsocci family since March 2, 1978. The Marsocci family has kept the tradition of a family business alive on Lake Street in Bergen. In March 2008, the store will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary.
