The Staple Bend Tunnel, about convert|4|mi|km|1 east of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was constructed between 1831 and 1834 for the Allegheny Portage Railroad. Construction began on April 12 1831. [cite web| url=http://avenue.org/nrhs/histapr.htm| title=This Month in Railroad History: April| author=Rivanna Chapter, National Railway Historical Society| year=2005| accessdate=April 12| accessyear=2006| ] This tunnel, at convert|901|ft|m|0 in length, was the first railway tunnel constructed in the United States. It is now part of the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, administered by the National Park Service.
