Schramm began skating at age 6. His coach was Erich Zeller. He trained at the national center in Oberstdorf, and skated for the EC Oberstdorf club representing West Germany. Amongst his team members were Rudi Cerne and Heiko Fischer. He won the European Championships twice, and also won two silver medals at the World Championships. Schramm gained worldwide publicity for his red outfits, his choreography and spontaneous creativity on ice, but also for creating new spins and reinventing old forgotten spins. Therefore he was labeled "World Best Ice Entertainer" by journalists.
In 1984 he retired from amateur competition and became professional world champion in Washington, D.C., U.S.. He also appeared in ice shows such as Holiday on Ice and also directed and choreographed such shows. In 1988, he began coaching figure skaters. From 2002 until 2007 he was artistic director of the ice show at Europapark. In 2006 he was a representative of the German "Dancing on Ice" television show.
He was married to Nicola Brown, and his daughter Bernadette Schramm was born on March 4, 1994. Currently, Norbert Schramm lives in Germany. He works as a choreographer and occasionally works for/with television programs. April 2011 Norbert Schramm married German-American filmmaker Marianne Hettinger, a resident of New York City for over 20 years. The couple has starred together in Hettinger's most recent movie "Saint Vitus Dance", which can be seen at film festivals all over the world.
