Extents

The East Auckland area includes some suburbs of Manukau City and Auckland City, typified by Howick but including Pakuranga, Panmure, Glen Innes, Half Moon Bay, Mount Wellington and Dannemora. Broadly speaking, East Auckland is the urban area stretching from the Auckland City suburb of Glen Innes moving southeast past Panmure and Pakuranga, southwards through to Greenmount, just north of East Tamaki.

East Auckland also includes the more rural Manukau City townships such as Whitford, Beachlands, Maraetai, Brookby and Clevedon.East Auckland does not include the more southern suburbs such as Ardmore, Flat Bush, and Alfriston nor the Papakura area.

Some of the suburbs, such as Dannemora, contain predominantly new housing. The area also contains the widely-recognized shopping area and mall Botany Town Centre.

tereotype

The name "East Auckland" has just come into frequent use. Since the area is quite new and modern it has attracted many foreign visitors to New Zealand, making it the "Asian Capital" of Auckland. As a slang term (usually offensive), many people rename some areas "Chowick" and "Japuranga" after the high number of East Auckland residents being of Chinese descent although immigration has led to a vibrant and interesting community.

East Aucklanders could also be described as direct opposites to the stereotype of the 'Westie'.
