Forbes was drafted by the California Angels in the 20th round of the 1990 amateur draft after a four-year collegiate career at Wichita State University, during which he was a vital part of the Shockers' 1989 NCAA College World Series championship squad. He would see playing time with two teams in his career, the Baltimore Orioles and the Philadelphia Phillies. He primarily played in the minor leagues, however.
When playing for the Orioles, Forbes spent most of his time for their then AAA club the Rochester Red Wings with whom he ended his playing career. He is widely regarded as the favorite player of Rochester fans of the last decade. He wore the uniform number 7.
He began his managerial career in the Philadelphia Phillies organization with the Class A Lakewood Blueclaws in '04 & '05. He then managed the class AA Reading Phillies from '06-'08. He began managing in the Pirates' system in 2009 with the Lynchburg Hillcats in the Carolina League. After the Pirates swapped Single A teams with Cincinnati Reds, Forbes spent 2010 the manager of the Pirates' new affiliate in the Florida State League, the Bradenton Marauders. After the season, Forbes was promoted and will spend 2011 as the manager of the Pirates' AA affiliate, the Altoona Curve.
P.J. has a world series ring, having been associated with the 2008 World Champion Phillies.
