Central Lancashire

Central Lancashire, also known as Preston City, was a designated new town in England. The designated area covers the towns of Preston, Leyland (in South Ribble) and Chorley (in the borough of Chorley). It was designated a new town by the Secretary of State for the Environment on March 26, 1970, the last designation to be made.

The largest of the English new towns, Central Lancashire New Town covered 35,255 acres (142 km²), and covered the entirety of the county borough of Preston, and parts of Chorley, Fulwood, Leyland and Walton-le-Dale, and also parts of Chorley Rural District and Preston Rural District.London Gazette. Central Lancashire New Town pioneered the use of Shared Ownership (a new form of Property ownership introduced by the Housing Act 1980) and also witnessed the first transfer of social housing stock to registered Housing Associations following tenant consultation and ballots.

The British Office for National Statistics gives a figure for the 'Preston urban area', covering Preston, Leyland, Chorley, Euxton and Wymott, of 365,000
