Central Lancashire, also known as Preston City, was a designated new town in
England . The designated area covers the towns ofPreston , Leyland (inSouth Ribble ) andChorley (in the borough of Chorley). It was designated a new town by theSecretary of State for the Environment onMarch 26 ,1970 , the last designation to be made.The largest of the English new towns, Central Lancashire New Town covered 35,255 acres (142 km²), and covered the entirety of the
county borough of Preston, and parts ofChorley , Fulwood, Leyland andWalton-le-Dale , and also parts ofChorley Rural District andPreston Rural District .London Gazette. April 14, 1970.] .Central Lancashire New Town pioneered the use of Shared Ownership (a new form of Property ownership introduced by the Housing Act 1980) and also witnessed the first transfer of social housing stock to registered Housing Associations following tenant consultation and ballots.
