In the summer of 2005, Eric participated in USA Basketball trials and training camp for the World University Games team
Eric's older brother Derrick Hicks played football at North Carolina A&T and sister Tonya Jones played basketball at Fordham.
He is often compared to former Cincinnati teammate, now Detroit Pistons player, Jason Maxiell due to both of them overcoming height disadvantages to be solid power forwards. Maxiell is 6'7" and Hicks is 6'6".
