Hyphen-minus

Hyphen-minus

The hyphen-minus is the character at position 2DHEX in ASCII and standards that derive from it. It is used as a hyphen, a minus sign and a dash. This was a compromise that made sense in the early days of fixed-width typewriters and computer displays but is considered to be ugly in proper typesetting. Nonetheless its usage persists as it is easy to enter on keyboards, well known, and at the same place in all common character sets.

Most programming languages use the hyphen-minus, not the minus sign, for denoting subtraction and negative numbers.
