Harbor Heights

Harbor Heights

Harbor Heights is a neighborhood of the Mamaroneck Village bordered by an arc of the Mamaroneck River on the north and east, Saxon Woods Park on the west and the New England Thruway on the south.

History

Originally known as the Knolls, Harbor Heights was first developed by Harry Rich Mooney in the 1920s and anchored by homes on Knollwood Avenue as the premiere showcase for his real estate development. Mr. Mooney built a varied selection of modest homes including those in the Tudor and French Provincial styles that were a hallmark of southern Westchester design of the early 20th century.

Mr. Mooney promoted the Knolls as a wholesome and convenient alternative to living in New York City. He advertised The Knolls in a nominal publication called Mooney's Megaphone in the New York Herald Tribune. An issue of November 12, 1927 shows drawings and photographs of house designs with names such as the Dorset, Mayfair and Le Bourget. The small advertising booklet was interspersed with testimonials of quality workmanship and the pleasant, family-friendly attributes of the area. Once Knollwood Avenue was established, other developers built homes east (across Mamaroneck Avenue) to the Mamaroneck River and the name Harbor Heights is inclusive of this area. Harbor Heights continues to maintain its predominant architectural characteristics of tidy 3 and 4 bedroom houses set on quarter-acre lots, tree-lined streets, with a quaint neighborhood-feel even considering the addition of many houses built during the post-World War II housing boom. These homes typically differ in style from their pre-war antecedents.
