WVEN-TV channel 26 is a television affiliate of Univision licensed to serve Daytona Beach, Florida, but with sufficient signal to cover Orlando and Melbourne, Florida. The station is owned by Entravision and offers a Spanish language entertainment format. WVEN takes its call letters from the word "Ven", which in English means "Come". The studios for WVEN are located in Altamonte Springs and the studios are shared by WOTF-TV 43 (owned by Univision but managed by Entravision).

WVEN can also be seen on WVCI-LP channel 16 in Orlando and W46DB channel 46 in Melbourne.

History

Beach TV partners signed on Channel 26 and named them WAYQ on January 2, 1988. The station would simulcast 56 WAYK (now WOPX) in Melbourne, which had a poor signal in Orlando and no signal in Daytona Beach. Orlando was then served by 2 stations with a poor signal -- channel 26's transmitter was, and still is, located near Pierson, the northernmost town in Volusia County. While channel 26 would cover Daytona Beach with a city grade signal, it was too far north to provide Orlando with a clear signal.

The stations ran a general entertainment format with cartoons, drama shows, first run syndicated shows and old movies. Nearly the entire schedule was supported by barter.

In 1992 the stations were both sold to Robert Rich, to move the stations toward more paid programming. The stations were renamed WIRB 56 and WNTO 26. In 1996 Paxson bought 56 WIRB while Entravision bought 26 WNTO. At that time, Entravision moved its low-powered Univision affiliate, WVEN-LP channel 63 to the channel 26 signal (which was re-called with the WVEN calls), increasing its viewership across east central Florida. Meanwhile, channel 56 became WOPX and ran Paxson's programming.

Digital

WVEN's main digital signal on channel 49, not yet in operation, originates near WESH's transmitter in Orange City. Currently, WVEN is operating its digital service from its Pierson site at a low power of 3 kW.

News

WVEN has a 6:00 PM newscast called "Noticias Univision Orlando a las 6" and an 11:00 PM newcast called "Noticias Univision Orlando a las 11". Plans for a morning newscast is in the works.
