It was temporarily referred to Gamma-2 Sagittarii (γ2 Sgr). The Bayer designation "Gamma Sagittarii" was temporarily shared by two star systems in this constellation, γ1 Sagittarii and γ2 Sagittarii. They are separated by 0.86° on the sky, and can be resolved by the naked eye.
It has the proper names Alnasl (Nasl, El Nasl) and Nushaba (Nash). Alnasl is derived from the Arabic النصل al-naşl meaning "arrowhead". Nushaba is derived from the Arabic Zujj al-Nashshaba meaning same as Alnasl.
Gamma Sagittarii is a K type giant, and approximately 95 light years from the Earth.
