Chestermere's history begins with the construction of the headworks of an irrigation water supply which formed Chestermere Lake. Contemporary issues
Although Chestermere is considered a separate town in its own right, its proximity to Calgary has led to occasional questions regarding possible annexation as Calgary grows. In July 2007, the City of Calgary annexed an extensive tract of land from the
Municipal District of Rocky View . This annexation places the current eastern city limits of Calgary about a mile from the western outskirts of Chestermere. [City of Calgary [http://content.calgary.ca/CCA/City+Hall/Business+Units/Development+and+Building+Approvals+and+Land+Use+Planning+and+Policy/Land+Use+Planning/Current+Studies+and+Ongoing+Activities/Annexation+Information/Annexation+Information.htm 2007 Annexation Information] ] In March 2007, the Town of Chestermere published a Growth Study that proposes annexation of, among other areas, the intervening land between Chestermere and the newly expanded Calgary boundaries, which would place the town immediately adjacent to the city.
