Koolyanobbing is located 54 km NNE of the town of Southern Cross, Western Australia.
Iron ore is currently mined here by Portman Ltd which is then railed to Esperance for export.

The first European to visit the area was Charles Cooke Hunt in 1864 who explored the Koolyanobbing range that is situated nearby.

The next European to visit the area, in 1887, was a gold prospector named Henry Dowd, who thought that the rocks in the area were of no value. He recorded his findings and stored them in a bottle that was buried next to a survey peg and which was found again in 1963. This area is now known as Dowd Hill. The town was created to supply a iron ore mine that was located nearby and was built in the 1960s. The town was gazetted in 1965. [LandInfo WA|c|K|2008-09-20] The name is of local Aboriginal origin, meaning "place of large rocks". [ Boyle, Bronwyn, "Do or die for Koolyanobbing", "The Wheatbelt Mercury", 27 November 1991, p. 12-13 ]
BHP Billiton mined the iron ore between 1967 and 1983, following construction of the newly-aligned Eastern Goldfields section of the Perth to Kalgoorlie railway.
