11 July 2006 Mumbai train bombings: One of the bomb-damaged coaches at the Mahim station

• January 2 – Rajnath Singh assumes office as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief.

• January 26 – Soudi monarch King Abdullah is chief guest at Republic Day parade in New Delhi.
