Its name comes from the Romanian word brad, "fir".
Five villages are administered by the city: Mesteacăn (Mesztákon), Potingani (Pottingány), Ruda-Brad (Ruda), Ţărăţel (Cerecel) and Valea Bradului (Vályabrád).
History
The city was first documented in 300 BC. At first it was a gold mine, and the town developed around it. Gold mining is still active today.
