Purushottam Institute of Engineering and Technology (PIET), Rourkela, Kansbahal (Oriya: ପୁରୁଶୋତ୍ମ୍ ଇନ୍ସତିତୁଟ୍ ଓଫ୍ ଏନଗିନୀରିନଗ୍ ଅଣ୍ଡ ତକେନୋଲୋଜିି, Hindi: पुरुषोत्तम अभियान्त्रिकी एवं प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान, रौरकेला) was established in academic year 1999-2000 to impart degree courses in engineering under the Purushottam Education & Welfare Trust. The prime objective of the trust has been the promotion of facilities of technical education for people of west Orissa and around.

The institute is accredited to NBA affiliation, with ISO 9001:2000 certification and is affiliated to Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) under AICTE.^[1]

Academics

The college offers four-year undergraduate B.Tech degree program in the following engineering disciplines:

• Applied Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering

It also offers three-year postgraduate degree program in MCA, two-year Master degree in MBA and three-year B.Tech degree for diploma holders under lateral entry scheme with the approval of AICTE New Delhi, recognised by the government of Orissa and affiliated under Biju Patnaik University of Technology, Rourkela.^[2]

Admission procedure

The students are admitted through OJEE/AIEEE national-level entrance test. There is a provision of Lateral Entry of 10% of sanctioned intake for diploma holders directly to the third semester in their respective branch of study as per the BPUT guidelines.

Administration

The administrative structure is de-centralised and clustered, giving way for efficiency and development.

Student empowerment

Robotics Seminar

The task of evaluating faculty members is given to students. Evaluation is conducted once a semester to keep track of academic performance of faculty members. The students also evaluate the facilities on the campus. The registrar, the head of the administration, sees to it that all difficulties are removed for the benefit of the students. The management strongly believes that the students should have the first say on what they like and what they don't like.

Curricular activities

These activities are designed to promote logical thinking, team work and leadership.^[19] To promote creativity, programs known as “Talent Time” are conducted to encourage students to exhibit their talents during the hour. The “Talent Time” program is held once a month. The institution conducted festivals named ABHIVYAKTI 2011 and ATMA TRISHA 2010.

Sports and games

The institution has a focus on sports and games. Students are guided by the director for sports, a physical training director and members of the faculty. Students spend at least an hour every day in games.

The annual sports "PIET Fiesta" is college-level event conducted in February. Inter-house games are also conducted. Games are compulsory for students residing at the hostels. PIET has won the prestigious Padmanava Cup ^[20] — an annual inter-collegiate cricket tournament where engineering institutions and universities take part in Orissa.

Library

The college has a central library with more than one hundred foreign and Indian magazines and thousands of books. It has almost 16,000 unique articles related to text books, reference books, abstracts and indexes, reports, encyclopedias, data books, standards (national and international) journals.

It has got online journals from IEEE and Springer link to facilitate the students with future research activities.^[21]

PIET Rourkela is situated on a sprawling campus spread over 26 acres (0.105218 km²) of land on the outskirts of Rourkela city amid lush greenery. The campus is spotted with lakes and hillocks.

PIET is a fully residential institution with two hostels for boys and two for girls. The capacity of boys hostels is 400 and that of the girls hostels is 300. Room allotment is done so that students from different parts of country freely intermingle with each other, promoting national integration. High speed Internet connection is available in all the hostels 24 hours a day.

The institute is divided into seven major blocks, along with one open hall theater for cultural programs. The first major block consists of section A building and the second block consists of section B building. The former third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh blocks consists of the Mechanical Department, Department of Training & Placement, New building block for MBA (under construction), new hostels for students and staff (under construction). The last block consists of the Mandiakudar Post Office.

Wi-Fi

The college has got excellent Wi-Fi access with Internet access at a speed of 100 mbps. The campus is connected to wireless Internet system from STPI (128 kbps) and reliance optical fibre (2 mbps) that helps sharing of Internet to students and teachers for accessing e-journals and question banks.

Placement

The training and placement cell helps get students placed in multinational and Indian companies.
