Oxford International Relations Society Abbreviation IRSoc Type Student organisation Purpose/focus Education Location Oxford, England Official languages English President Jan Willem Scholten Affiliations ANU International Relations Society The Oxford International Relations Society is a university society open to members of Oxford University dedicated to the discussion of International Relations and the opportunities and challenges in global affairs, including international law.[1]
The Society attracted attention for its controversial decision to host the Prime Minister of Thailand, Mr Abhisit Vejjajiva, despite a protest organised by Mr Lee Jones of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. The talk received attention in the Bangkok Post, a prominent Thai newspaper as well as in the blogosphere.[2][3]
The Society's Senior Members include Professor of International Political Economy in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Oxford University Walter Mattli and Professor in Economics Vijay Joshi. Oxford International Relations Society receives funding from the Oxford University Clubs Committee.[4]

Notable speakers at the Society include former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, Nobel Prize Winner Thomas Schelling, Former CIA Director Ray McGovern, current editor of The Economist John Micklethwait, Former UK ambassador to the US David Manning, High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina Lord Paddy Ashdown, and American political scientist Norman Finkelstein.[5][6]
In 2010, the society jointly hosted the President of the Asian Development Bank, together with the Oxford Asia Pacific Society.[7]
In May 2011 the society hosted General Stanley McChrystal, Former Commander, International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and Commander, U.S. Forces Afghanistan (USFOR-A).
The Society received positive reviews in the Cherwell and OUSU handbook.[8][9]
