Orbost Station information Line Orbost Distance from Southern Cross 372.614 km Number of platforms 1 Number of tracks 1 Station status Closed Station opened 1916 Station closed 1987 Orbost Railway Station was opened on Monday 10 April 1916 as the terminus of the Orbost railway line, and closed in 1987. The station was located on the west side of the Snowy River despite the town of Orbost being on the east side of the river, in order to save on the costs of a bridge over the river, which at the time had highly variable levels.[1]
An impressive low level causeway over the river flats consisting of a series of timber and steel bridges called the Orbost Viaduct, which was part of the former rail line, still exists leading towards the station site.[2]
Little evidence remains of the station site itself other than parts of the concrete face of the passenger platform, however a shared pathway from the end of the East Gippsland Rail Trail into Orbost passes near the site.[3]
