openCanvas Developer(s) PGN Co. Ltd. Stable release 5.1.04 / August 2, 2011 Operating system Microsoft Windows Available in 2 languages Type Raster graphics editor License Shareware Website portalgraphics.net openCanvas is a paint/drawing software developed and published by PGN Co. Ltd. It was originally released as freeware in 2000[1], but moved to a demo/retail model starting with version 2.[2] While it does not compete in larger markets and lacks many of the commonly used features of programs like Adobe Photoshop or Corel Painter, openCanvas has a growing community of users all over the world which can be found on the PGN User Community section of the portalgrapics website.
On July 31, 2009, portalgraphics.net ended the sales of the openCanvas English versions. At the same time, they ended the English version of the portalgraphics website and their online English Customer Services including PGN User Community. English Customer Support was to be discontinued on July 31, 2010. This meant that portalgraphics.net would no longer provide interactive email support in English associated with openCanvas products. However, the English portalGraphics website went active again shortly afterwards, and portalGraphics has continued sales of openCanvas 4.5 Plus to the present, with the latest release being version 5.05.[3]

Further information: Comparison of raster graphics editors#FeaturesopenCanvas provides many artistic and functional features found in other graphic design software, such as intelligent coloring, support for layers, filters, and the ability to read and write multiple file formats.
One key feature of openCanvas is the event file. Event files replay the "steps" taken to create the image/work by playing it back frame-by-frame at high speeds. These files can be shared among users and on the PNG User Community website. Event files can either be left unlocked which allows the user to edit the contents of the file; or locked, so they cannot be edited. Up until the last free version, 1.1-b72, openCanvas also included network support, allowing artists to collaborate in real-time over the internet, using different layers of the same drawing. This feature was removed starting from version 2.[4]
