Route description
The western terminus of NC 72 and NC 710 is in Red Springs at the NC 211 intersection[2], from there they travel south (signed east) 1.8-mile (2.9 km) and split, with NC 72 heading towards lumberton. The highway has an interchange with Interstate 95 / US Highway 301 shortly before entering Lumberton. Inside Lumberton, it has a brief 0.5-mile (0.80 km) cuncurrency with NC 41. The final leg of the route sees it intersect with NC 211 then head south (signed east) to its terminal junction with US Highway 74.
History
NC 72 was created in 1934 running from Red Springs to NC 711 near Lumberton. The 1950s saw a small eastern extention to NC 72, with its terminus becoming present-day Interstate 95 / US 301. In the 1980s NC 72 was extended again, gaining its current terminus with US 74.
