Amateur career
Ishida was born in Tamana District, Kumamoto and moved to Neyagawa, Osaka soon after. He began boxing at the Osaka Teiken Boxing Gym at the sixth grade of elementary school.[2][3] When Ishida was a high school freshman, he fought in the flyweight division at 176 centimeters tall, as an in-fighter.[4] He won the national high school invitational tournament in the lightweight division in 1993.[5]
After graduating from Kinki University, Ishida gained another amateur title in the light middleweight in 1998,[6] and had an amateur record of 101–15 (50 KOs).[7] Ishida worked for the child welfare for two years and two months, and obtained a qualification related to the social welfare in those days.[8]
Professional career
Super Welterweight
Ishida turned professional in 1999, and made his debut on May 20, as a boxer managed by Kanazawa Boxing Gym.[9] There he received Toshihiro Fujitani's guidance,[3] until the end of 2010.
On March 1, 2001 he fought against Kook-Yul Song from South Korea to challenge his OPBF super welterweight title, and he won by major decision during the eleventh round because the bout was stopped as Ishida's right eye was injured after the accidental headbutt. He managed to get his first title in his 6th match.
On May 13, 2001 he fought against Seiji Takechi the interim champion to unify his OPBF title, but he lost by a unanimous decision at the twelfth round and lost his title. This was his first lose in professional career.
On September 24, 2001 he fought against Joya Kawai the Japanese national champion at Super welterweight to get his title, but he lost by a unanimous decision at the twelfth round.
On December 2, 2006 he also captured the Japanese super welterweight title. Ishida has often trained under the guidance of Rudy Hernandez at the Maywood Boxing Club in Maywood, California, United States.[10][11][12]
Ishida won the interim of WBA super welterweight title against Venezuelan Marco Antonio Avendaño in Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium on August 30, 2009.[13] In the first defense of that title on December 29, 2009 he knocked down Colombian Oney Valdez at the tenth round and defeated him by a unanimous decision again, at the same venue.[14]
On October 9, 2010 Ishida fought the Mexican Rigoberto Álvarez for the vacant WBA World super welterweight championship as his first expedition match in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico.[15] He could not win the world title, and lost his interim title via a split decision.[16] After this defeat, Ishida signed a management contract with Green-Tsuda Boxing Club[17][* 1] and a promotional contract with Mexico's Canelo Promotions under the supervision of Edison Reynoso[20] who handled the previous fight,[21] for the forthcoming bouts.
Middleweight
Ishida moved up in weight division and knocked out previously undefeated up-and-comer James Kirkland whose record was 27–0 (24 KOs) in the first round of an eight-round middleweight bout at the MGM Grand Las Vegas on April 9, 2011.[22] After that upset, Reynoso announced he has a big plan for Ishida.[20] Sampson Lewkowicz, the adviser of Sergio Gabriel Martínez, made an offer to Ishida as one of the possible opponents for Martínez.[23] Ishida was once scheduled to fight Paul Williams at a maximum weight of 155 pounds on July 9, 2011, at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.[24][25] However that was canceled.[26]
Currently Ishida is co-promoted by Canelo Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions,[26] and co-trained by Rudy Hernandez and Daisuke Okabe.[10] He has been training in Los Angeles from July, 2011.[27] He is scheduled to serve as Saúl Álvarez's sparring partner in his training camp in Mexico from November 2011.[28]
