History

The area which Kid's World currently occupies was originally known as Village Green when it opened in 1983.[2] In 1998, the area was renamed to Village Oval.[3] In 2000, the northern end of Village Oval was redesigned to become Kennyland.[4] In early 2002, Kennyland was removed and most of Village Oval was fenced off. Some of the children's rides were moved to Rivertown to allow for the construction of Nickelodeon Central.[5] During that year the leftover rides were rethemed and relocated to their current positions as part of Nickelodeon Central.[6] Nickelodeon Central opened on 26 December 2002 as the largest children's area in an Australian theme park.[7] In 2008, SpongeBob FlyPants (now Kite Flyer) opened to expand Nickelodeon Central's offerings.[8] Towards the middle of 2011, elements of Nickelodeon themeing started to be removed leading to speculation that the contract with the television network was being terminated.[9] By the start of the winter holidays on 25 June 2011, all of the rides were renamed to a generic interim kids theme: Kid's World.[1] In October 2011, the former Nick Pics building and the Remota Boats area were demolished with work beginning on a replacement building on the Nick Pics site.[10]

Earlier in the year, the outgoing CEO of Dreamworld, Noel Dempsey,[11] leaked Dreamworld's plans to team up with DreamWorks Animation on his LinkedIn profile page.[12][13] On 10 November 2011, Dreamworld officially announced a three-stage plan to incorporate DreamWorks Animation films and characters into its theme park. The first phase, set to open 19 December 2011, will include the DreamWorks Holiday Shrektacular Show featuring 8 DreamWorks Animation characters live on stage. The second phase will include the retheming of Dreamworld's kids area, Kid's World, into a 8,400-square-metre (90,000 sq ft) DreamWorks Experience precinct. This phase is set to open in Easter 2012. The final phase will be the development of an eating and meet-and-greet area called Kung Fu garden.[14] The three phases are expected to cost $10 million to complete.[15]

Rides

Avalanche (when it was Angry Beavers Spooty Spin)

Avalanche

Avalanche is a matterhorn ride. The ride originally opened under that name in 1983 with Village Green.[2] It was repainted and renamed to Angry Beavers Spooty Spin in 2002 to suit the new Nickelodeon theme.[17] In 2011, the ride returned to its original name and theme.[1][18][19]

Blues Skidoo

Blues Skidoo is a fixed arm, rotating plane ride themed to Nickelodeon's Blues Clues.[20] The ride originally opened as Dream Copters as part of Kennyland in 2000.[4] The ride was moved to be a part of the temporary Kid's Carnival during the construction of Nickelodeon Central. Due to its operation throughout the construction of Nickelodeon Central, the ride did not have a chance to be rethemed to suit the Nickelodeon theme.[5] In 2004, two years after Nickelodeon Central opened, the ride was rethemed with new vehicles and renamed to Blues Skidoo.[21][22] By the start of the winter holidays on 25 June 2011, Blues Skidoo was the only ride in Nickelodeon Central not to get a retheme but to remain operating.[1]

Bumper Beach

Bumper Beach is a set of bumper cars.[23] The ride opened with the adjacent Game Site as Bumper Bowl[24] before being renamed and rethemed to Rocket Power Bumper Beach from 2002 through to 2011. It was renamed a third time in 2011 to Bumper Beach.[1][18][19] Throughout its lifetime, the ride's entrance and exit gates have been modified several times although the actual ride has not been moved.

Kite Flyer

Kite Flyer is a Zamperla Kite Flyer.[1][18][19] It opened in June 2008 as the only new attraction to be added to Nickelodeon Central after its initial opening.[8][25] The ride utilises a previously empty portion of Kid's World beside the Kid Spot merchandise shop and Bumper Beach.[26][27] It was renamed to Kite Flyer in 2011.[1][18][19]

Mighty-Go-Round

Mighty-Go-Round is a carousel. The ride originally opened as the Carousel in 1983 with Village Green.[2] The ride operated for 6 years as part of Nickelodeon Central as the Nick-O-Round (2002–2008)[28] before changing its name to the Backyardigans Mighty-Go-Round in 2008.[29] In 2011, the ride was renamed to Mighty-Go-Round.[1][18][19]

Rainforest Rampage

Rainforest Rampage opened with Nickelodeon Central in 2002 as Wild Thornberry's Rainforest Rampage. It is a ball play area which allows kids to fire foam balls throughout the enclosure at targets and each other.[30] It was renamed to Rainforest Rampage in 2011.[1][18][19]

Sky Rocket roller coaster (when it was Rugrats Runaway Reptar)

Sky Rocket

Sky Rocket is a suspended family roller coaster which opened in 2002 with Nickelodeon Central as Rugrats Runaway Reptar. The roller coaster was the third of its type in the world and the first in the Southern Hemisphere.[31] The ride remains to be Dreamworld's only children's roller coaster.[29] It was renamed to Sky Rocket in 2011.[1][18][19]

Swinger Zinger

Swinger Zinger is a swinger ride.[32] The ride has been operating at the park since 1982. It was originally known as Zumer when it was located in Country Fair and Ocean Parade[33] until it was relocated and renamed in 2002 to its current position and name.[1][18][19][29]

Dreambowl

The Dreambowl is Kid's World's show stage. It runs two shows on most days: "The Kenny Koala Show" and "The Goldie Show".[34][35] The arena opened in 2002 with Nickeldeon Central where it would show: "Slime Time Live", "SpongeBob SquarePants Stories from Bikini Bottom" or "Blues Clues Live".[36][37][38]

Shopping & Dining

Kid's World is home to a single merchandise outlet and a single food outlet. Kid Spot is a merchandise shop located near Kite Flyer and Bumper Beach. The Pizza Shack is a food outlet offering a variety of food and beverage options. It was originally home to Fun Snapz, a photo store, which was demolished in October 2011.[18]
