The New Zealand Cooperatives Association (formerly the New Zealand Agricultural Cooperatives Association) brings together New Zealand's cooperative and mutual businesses in a not-for-profit incorporated society which aims to provide support to its members, raise the profile of and awareness around cooperative and mutual enterprise, and promote the cooperative business model.

Aims

The aims of the New Zealand Cooperatives Association are to[1]:

  • PROMOTE: encourage, promote and advance New Zealand cooperatives and mutuals.
  • REPRESENT: act as a representative Association for those engaged as cooperatives.
  • ADVOCATE: promote discussion and cooperation with decision makers at all levels of government designed to further the interests of the cooperative movement.
  • INFORM: collect, verify, and publish information relating to the cooperative movement.
  • SUPPORT: provide services and expertise to those engaged in the cooperative industry and to carry out research into all aspects of the movement.

Association structure

With an office in central Wellington, the Association employs an Executive Director and a part-time Communications Offier. A bookkeeper works two mornings a month, and volunteers come through Volunteer Wellington.

At each year’s annual general meeting, members elect a council to provide governance for the Association as well as a Chairperson who gives direction to the Executive Director.

As at November 2011, the NZ Cooperatives Association has 55 full member businesses, with around half being agriculturally-based cooperatives.
