Narmin Kamal

Narmin Kamal (born 1981, Azerbaijan Republic, Baku) is a writer.

Education

Narmin Kamal (Farajullayeva) was born (1981) and raised in Baku, Azerbaijan, and obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees in Philosophy in Baku State University. Mainly her scientific publications are on 20-th century European Philosophy. 2007 - obtained her PhD. "Umberto Eco and Philosophy of Postmodernism" - her PhD thesis was published in 2008 in Baku. Researched the subject of her thesis in Spain (University of Navarra) and in Italy (Bologna University) with a European supervisor. Her fields of interest include, history of 20.century Western Philosophy but are not limited to, philosophical approaches on political and social processes, postmodernism, animal rights, gender, contemporary art, modern prose and poetry.

Creativity

She is one of the founders of the Alatoran movement, the Foundation of Independent Writers, in contemporary Azerbaijani literature. Translated academic texts and important works into Azerbaijani, including works by Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault and Umberto Eco. These were the first translations of these authors into Azerbaijani. She writes poems, prose and journalistic as well as scientific texts primarily on social questions. Her poems appeared in Azerbaijani, Turkish, Russian, Armenian, German, French in different print and online journals, almanacs of European authors. Her novel "Open, It's Me" was published in Baku in 2010. In 2011 it was published Sophie's World of Jostein Gaarder in Baku, Azerbaijan, N.Kamal translated the novel from English into Azerbaijani.

Awards and Distinctions

1. In 2008 she was one of twelve European writers invited to write an essay for the young.euro.connect festival.^[1] She was among the six invited to the readings in Berlin and Munich, her essay "Europe-united fraternity?" and travel essay were later selected for the anthology "YOUNG EURO CONNECT 2005-2008: PUBLIKATION AUSGEWÄHLTER ESSAYS".

2. She was the winner of 1-st place of the essay competition “The Life and Thoughts of a Woman in Azerbaijan”, the competition which was organized with the generous support of the British Embassy in Baku in 2010.

3. In 2010 she was awarded the best novel of the year The Nasimi National Literature Award for her novel "Open, It's Me" in Azerbaijan.

4. She is a writer-in-residence in Vienna at the Kulturkontakt in 2011.
