Prof. A.K. Koul has been appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor of the University. NUSRL is currently functioning out of a temporary campus in BIT, Mesra. It was formally inaugurated by the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court and Supreme Court Judge designate Gyan Sudha Mishra on April 26, 2010, in the Birla Institute of Technology-Mesra campus.
The university has acquired a 100 acre site in the out skirts of Ranchi, neighbouring IIM-Ranchi, Indian Institute of Coal Management, Central University of Jharkhand and Birsa Agricultural University. The 100-acre site, once finished will become the largest National Law University campus in India.
