Organization
The Mount Dora Police Department is headed by the Chief of Police, T. Randall Scoggins. The remainder of the administration consists of a deputy chief and 2 lieutenants. A lieutenant is the commander of his or her respective division. There are two main divisions, the patrol division and the special operations division.
Patrol division
The patrol division is headed by a lieutenant and consists of four shifts. Each shift is assigned a Sergeant, Corporal and 1 officer. Each officer is assigned to a zone within the city for the 12 hour shift. The department also maintains a number of reserve officers who assume patrol functions when needed. An animal control officer is responsible for assisting residents with most animal and wildlife related complaints.
Special operations division
This division is headed by a lieutenant. The K9 Unit, CID, Motorcycle units , SRT Team and Traffic Homicide (THI) officers also fall under this division. Specialized events are handled here, and assignments range from stakeouts, drug enforcement and other special events. Members of this unit may be in uniform or plain clothing and may be assigned to a marked or unmarked patrol vehicle. During the first three years of operation, the Mount Dora Police Department Special Operations Unit participated in 75 search warrants, 490 drug-related arrests and 270 non drug-related arrests. These resulted in the seizure of 1,054 grams of cocaine, 167 pounds of cannabis, and 485 grams of other dangerous drugs.[2]
Accreditation
In 1984, the Mount Dora Police Department become the first agency in the United States to receive accredited status from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). As a result, the department has adopted "First in the Nation" as its motto.
On June 23, 2004, the Mount Dora Police Department was awarded accredited status by the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) at a Commission meeting in St. Pete Beach.
