The station is located on Princes Drive and is 144 km from Southern Cross station. A disused second line exists opposite the single platform, this was used in the past when SEC company trains ran and rail freight was more common. It is located in Zone 11 of the Myki ticketing system.
The station building is staffed and includes airconditioned/heated waiting room and public toilets incorporating baby change facility and separate wheelchair accessible toilet. A Parketeer cage was installed in late 2009.
Two branch lines exist at the down end of the station: The Maryvale paper mill branch and the Energex briquette branch. The Maryvale branch is regularly used for paper trains each weekday while the briquette branch is currently not in use.
There are hourly services in each direction from the station on weekdays, and from 1 hour to 2 hours on weekends.
Connecting bus services for both town services (which use the Myki ticketing system), as well as V/line coaches stop at the bus terminal located next to the revamped station. Buses used to be reached via sealed subway from the station building, but this was demolished in 2005. However, not all V/line buses stop at the station, some service Morwell by stopping at Mid Valley Shopping Centre.
History
Morwell station was opened on Friday, 1 June 1877, the same day as the Morwell to Sale section of the Gippsland Railway Line. The Station was electrified on Thursday, 15 March 1956, and had regular electric locomotive services until Thursday, 2 July 1987. The overhead wires was removed.
The station was also the terminus of the Mirboo North branch, closed in 1972.
Much of the old yard located adjacent to the station was pulled up in 2004 when the Regional Fast Rail works were occurring. Latrobe City's council offices now reside in the former location of the yard.
