History
It opened on November 5, 1968, at a cost of $50 million with 69 stores on a single level, anchored by J. C. Penney, The Broadway, and May Co. and was developed by contractor Ernest W. Hahn. The mall was upgraded with a second level in the mid-1980s. Currently JCPenney, Nordstrom, Sears, Macy's, and the recently opened Barnes and Noble are the anchor stores. The old Macy's site is currently vacant after the replacement of Robinsons May.
2008 renovation
Tough competition from Victoria Gardens since 2004 allowed many of the stores to fail and to keep its popularity, the mall was renovated in 2008.[1] In addition, the mall obtained new owners, and now Spinoso Real Estate Group owns the mall, managed by Cushman and Wakefield.
In Popular Culture
John Darnielle of indie rock band the Mountain Goats wrote an impromptu song regarding a date with his first girlfriend that took place at the mall during a sound check at Haverford College on 10/23/03. The song goes on to talk about the mall adding its second story.[2]
