Club career
As a player, Herrera made his first debut with Querétaro FC in 1990. Then he moved to Atlante FC in 1991, where he would remain until 1995. He was then sold to the now defunct team Toros Neza. The club would reach its first final in the "Verano '97" season, ultimately losing to Chivas with a total score of 7-2. In 1999, Herrera returned to Atlante for one more year before he would retire and pursue being a coach. He now has a prime time showtime position with the a coaching job that has skeptics on the lookout.
Coaching career
In 2002, only two years after retiring, Herrera came back to coach his old team Atlante. He coached for two years, but resigned after failing to take Atlante to a final. Starting the next season in the Apertura 2004 season, Herrera once again came back, but to coach CF Monterrey. He ironically ended up facing his ex-team Atlante in the semifinals, in where he defeated them in a global score of 7-3. He ultimately failed to make Monterrey champions where they lost to Pumas UNAM in the final with a global score of 3-1. He succeeded in taking Monterrey to another final in the Apertura 2005 season, where he failed once more to Toluca with a global score of 6-3. Herrera would continue to be Monterrey's coach until the Apertura 2007 season where his contract was terminated due to the continuous poor performances the team had made. In the Clausura 2008 season, Herrera was hired as coach for CD Veracruz after the resignation of Antonio Mohamed. There, he was in charge of preventing Veracruz from being relegated to the Primera División A, in which inevitably Veracruz was relegated. He continued to be the coach for Veracruz anyway until he was recently hired to coach Tecos UAG half-way in the Apertura 2008 to replace Jose Luis Trejo.
On November 16, 2011, Herrera was named the head coach at Club América. He will be the club's fourth manager in its 2011 season.[1]
