MicroStrategy Gateway was announced at the company’s user conference in July 2011.[1] Examples of applications that connect to MicroStrategy Gateway are Alert, Emma and Wisdom.
MicroStrategy Gateway converts Facebook social graph data into a tabular data structure, allowing easier personalization of enterprise apps such as CRM, marketing, service, sales, loyalty and mobile applications. This adds a level of social interactivity to the applications,[2] which may be Microsoft Windows applications, mobile applications for Apple iOS and Google Android, and ERP systems from Oracle, SAP and Microsoft.

Concept of friendly applications
MicroStrategy CEO Michael J. Saylor describes “friendly” applications as apps that are inherently mobile, social, and personal. Gateway allows enterprise companies across many industries connect to the Facebook social network to create friendly and intelligent social applications.
Features
Gateway’s set of features include:
- Facebook compliance
- Rich data query[2]: Ability to execute chained queries, generating rich query results by traversing social network pathways.
- Bidirectional data flow
- High efficiency query algorithms: Combines multiple overlapping queries into consolidated API calls to minimize the load on Facebook and improve performance.
- Real-time data response: Maintains an operational database to house social graph data, making the data available to applications even when Facebook connectivity is limited.
- Facebook governing safeguards: Gateway has self-monitoring features that help prevent data requests from exceeding Facebook’s governed maximums. Automatically restricts query submission if the governed levels are approached.
- Social analytics and segmentation
- Scalability: Built on an MPP architecture, enabling significant scale.
Use
MicroStrategy Gateway is one component of a larger strategy of social intelligence for enterprise business. Gateway includes various features that focus on performance and availability by using a governing mechanism to track query loads and a database to make social graph data available even when Facebook access is interrupted. Gateway converts Facebook’s data from a file-based system into a relational database structure.[3]
