He was also considered for the post of Bishop of Carlisle[2].
He was ordained in 1941 and began his career with a curacy at St James, Southbroom, Devizes [3], after which he was Priest in charge at Ramsbury and then Holy Trinity, Watermoor[4]. He was then a Master and Chaplain at Westminster School[5]. Following this he was Rector of St Margaret's, Westminster, a Canon of Westminster Abbey, and Speaker’s Chaplain [6] before his elevation to the Deanery. His son David Stancliffe was the Bishop of Salisbury[7].Notes
