Held since 1916 in Stuttgart, Germany, the Mercedes Cup is played on clay courts. Between 1970 and 1989 this was a Grand Prix tennis circuit event.
Thomas Muster of Austria won the title twice in consecutive years (1995 and 1996).
This tournament is famous for awarding the title winner with a Mercedes car, on top of the prize money.
