Life and career

Peres was born Melanie Mariam Thanee Frasch in (West) Berlin, Germany, named after the singer Melanie Safka to hippie parents Peter and Nurith Frasch. Her parents separated when she was three years old, Melanie was raised by her father until the age of fifteen when she moved to her mother with whom she immigrated to Israel in 1987. She has often mentioned in interviews that the move from Berlin to Nazareth was a traumatic experience. Although her mother was born in Israel, Melanie wasn't accustomed to the difference in mentality and didn't speak a word of Hebrew at the time of her immigration. She immediately enrolled in the Ulpan to study Hebrew and went to a local High-school but figured it was useless since she didn't understand a word. She left school and Nazareth to live in Tel Aviv at the age of 16 where she worked as a cleaner and a waitress until she began modeling in 1989. Peres started her long modeling career at the age of 17 on the cover of Israeli Magazine La Ischa. Later she was chosen as a contestant in the Israeli Beauty Contest "Face of the 80's" where she didn't make her mark but defied all when she quickly became a rising star in the Israeli Fashion World even without a crown. The photographers loved her chameleon-like ability to change from assignment to assignment. She traveled the world as a model until 1997 but has often expressed ambivalence towards her occupation in fashion. In an interview to Haaretz she called it "a Meat Market that leaves you scarred";[2] nevertheless she has also said that modeling saved her life since she had nothing to rely on when she immigrated to Israel and no financial support from her parents. Peres made her entrance on Israel's music scene with her broken Alto voice in 1998 and started acting in 2000 when asked why it took her so long she answered that it takes time to feel halfway comfortable in a language that isn't one's mother language. In 2006 the Israeli fashion brand Honigman asked her to represent their firm,[3][4][5][6] since then they developed a line inspired by her called Melanie Peres. She recorded a cover version of the Tears for Fears song Mad World in 2008 and was voted Israel's Sexiest Woman the same year.[7]
