1180785 [4]McMillan Woods was used during the Battle of Gettysburg and for Gettysburg Battlefield camps after the American Civil War, including the WWII POW camp at Gettysburg. The cast iron site identification tablet for the woods was placed in 1920,[3] and the woods is the site of a youth campground.
CCC camp
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp NP-2[5] had opened by February 3, 1934[1] in McMillan Woods near CCC Camp Renaissance in Pitzer Woods (camp NP-1). Charles Heilman was the 1936 commander of CCC camp No. 2,[2][3] and in 1937 the commander was involved in a hit and run accident.[4] The camp provided manpower for building the veterans camp for the 1938 Gettysburg reunion,[6] and about 50 enrollees of CCC Company #1355-C served as aides for unaccompanied veterans.[5]
In 1939, the McMillan Woods CCC camp became the 1st under an "all colored staff" when the white supervisory personnel transferred to the Blue Knob CCC camp[6] (the camp's singing quartet made public appearances in 1939.)[7] In March 1942, the McMillan Woods CCC camp was to be abandoned,[8] and the facility became the 1944-5 WWII POW camp at Gettysburg.
