Biography
Matty Newton built his name in the Australian music scene as bass player for Brisbane indie rock band Repeat Offender[1] from 2003 through 2009. In 2008 Matty and Erinn Swan formed the band Streamer Bendy.[2] He has also spent time performing as a guitarist with progressive rock band Nina May.[3] Early in his music career Matty was approached to tour as the bass player for the Tribute Theatre Company, Showtime[4] where he spent two years touring the world.
Start in Music
Matty picked up his first bass in 8th grade while he was saving money for a drum kit so he "could be just like Dave Grohl". Inspired by the likes of Nirvana, Frenzal Rhomb, Regurgitator and the Beatles, among others, Matt spent much of his time and effort learning all he could about music. He soon formed several bands in his hometown of Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia. Just before his 15th birthday Matty began performing regular all night covers gigs in local taverns and dive bars with his punk band, CareFactorZero. This continued for several years. By 2000 CareFactorZero had begun touring Australia and had picked up a slot on the Planet X Extreme Sports Festival Tour as well as tours with punk bands Strung Out, Frenzal Rhomb, Sunk Loto and Shihad (pacifier). In 2003 Matty moved to Brisbane, Queensland, Australia to study music performance and production at the Queensland University of Technology.[5]
Repeat Offender
As a founding member, Matty played bass, wrote the songs and managed Australian band Repeat Offender[6] who released several albums and toured with bands such as The Veronicas, The Butterfly Effect, Panic! at the Disco and played festivals such as Taste of Chaos, Big Day Out amongst others. Repeat Offender released their first ep "To a Modern Love..." on May 2006 independently and debuted at number 23 in the Australian singles charts. Repeat Offender toured heavily and performed over 600 shows[7] between 2003 and 2009.[8]
Streamer Bendy
Streamer Bendy are a Brisbane band currently recording their debut album between Stockholm, Los Angeles, Brisbane and Sydney. Matty formed the band in 2008 with Erinn Swan,[9] formerly of Nina May.[10] Initially the bass player for the group, Matty has also toured as their drummer and is currently performing on guitar and keys after several line-up changes. Along with Erinn Swan, Matt is a primary songwriter for the group.
Queen, it's a Kind of Magic
Queen, it's a Kind of Magic was the worlds largest and most successful Queen tribute act. As a touring member of this group from 2009 - 2010 he performed hundreds of shows between Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Singapore. Matty also performed as a Bass player for other shows produced by Showtime Entertainment during this time, including an ABBA show and a Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus production.
