Matt Scherer (born April 19, 1982 in Seattle, Washington) is an American professional ice hockey winger who currently plays for the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL.

Playing career

Scherer started his junior career with the Sioux City Musketeers of the USHL, where he played from 1999 to 2000, scoring 2 points in goals and assists and spending a combined 23 minutes in the penalty box in 19 games of regular season play.

In 2000, Scherer joined the newly-formed Tri-City Storm of the USHL, where he remained until 2003. While with the Storm, he scored 48 points in combined goals and assists and earned 154 penalty minutes during regular season play.

From 2003 to 2007, Scherer attended the University of Connecticut, where he played all four years. While with the Huskies, Scherer earned a combined 105 points in goals and assists and spent 183 minutes in the penalty box. He was named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie team his freshman year. Scherer was selected to be team captain his senior year, leading the Huskies to the Atlantic Hockey tournament semifinals, where they suffered a 3–1 loss to Army. Scherer was selected for the All-Atlantic Second Team that year, ranking second in the conference and tenth nationally.[1]

Scherer turned pro in 2007, moving to the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays, where he currently plays. While with the Stingrays, he has scored 79 points during regular season play and spent 175 minutes in the penalty box. In the 2008–09 post-season, Scherer earned 12 points in goals and assists, helping lift the Stingrays to their third Kelly Cup championship. Scherer was named team captain in January 2010, a position he currently holds.[2]
