It was discovered by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research project in Socorro, New Mexico on August 17, 1998.[1] It is named after Mate Jozsef Bezdek, who won second place at the 2008 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.[1] His father Károly Bezdek is a professor of mathematics at the University of Calgary.
