Saint Mary (Persian: مریم مقدس) is a film from Islamic Republic of Iran by Iranian director Shahriar Bahrani released in 2007, depicting the life of Mary mother of Jesus from classical Islamic readings.

It was filmed in Persian but has been dubbed into English[1] and there is also another version with English subtitles.[2]

The film is also known as 'Maryam al-Muqaddasah' (The Honourable/Blessed Saint Mary) and Maryam Moghaddas, Maryam Adhraa and Maryam Al-Muqadasa.

Footage from the film was used heavily in the August 19, 2007 British ITV documentary 'The Muslim Jesus'.[3] [4]

Production

The Iranian production depicting the life of Mary the mother of Jesus from classical Islamic readings. A two-hour long movie originally in Persian and dubbed into English by the Wilayah Network.

It is the story of the life of Mary and the birth of Jesus Christ - a prophet in Islamic tradition. Along with the character of Saint Mary, this film also presents the Righteous character of Prophet Zakariya, the guardian of Saint Mary.

Plot

Starting in the year 16 B.C. people of Jerusalem are waiting for the birth of the son of Imran, the "Messiah." But instead, a girl is born, Anna, her mother, names her Mary, which means the Servant of God. At the age of 6, Mary is presented in the temple, and remains there under the protection for Zakariya until the age of 16. She spends all of her time in labour and prayers, and is harassed by the Jewish priests. She achieves such holiness that the angel Gabriel secends upon her, and she gives birth to Jesus Christ.
