Born February 24, 1961 in São Paulo, Brazil, he and his family moved to Los Angeles in 1963. Caldato played keyboards and percussion in various bands ("Soul Stick", "Wake", "Phaze" and "Phaze II"), and started a PA rental with Mike Nishita, brother of his friend "Money" Mark Nishita. After building several of his own studios and visiting Jamaica, he produced The Jungle Bugs then later meet Matt Dike and helped produce Tone Loc's single "Cheeba Cheeba", and engineered the Beastie Boys' second album Paul's Boutique soon afterward. Since then, he has produced many albums for artists as various as Super Furry Animals and Molotov, but also produced most Beastie Boys albums up to and including Hello Nasty, all three Money Mark albums, and Molotov's "Apocalypshit". He has also produced many Brazilian artists, including Seu Jorge, Planet Hemp, Bebel Gilberto, Marcelo D2, and Chico Science & Nação Zumbi.
In 2008, he mixed the self-titled debut EP of One Day as a Lion, a project comprising Zack de la Rocha (of Rage Against the Machine) and Jon Theodore (previously of The Mars Volta).[1]
He also mixed during 2008 the debut album of Banda de Turistas titled "Magico Corazon Radiofonico", one of the revelations of the new Latin scene.
Recently, Caldato produced the Flobots album Survival Story, which was released in March 2010.[2] and has produced the Seu Jorge and Almaz self-titled album which was released by Now-Again Records in July 2010.
Caldato has also organised, recorded and produced a charitable album an Anglo-Brazilian collaboratory supergroup, The Bottletop Band.
