History
MTC was founded in 1980 by Robert L. Marquardt, when Morton Thiokol decided to divest some of its less profitable divisions. Marquardt, who worked for Morton, and his partners, borrowed $3.5 million to purchase the spin-off.[2]
2010 escape
Main article: 2010 jail break in Mohave County, ArizonaOn July 30, 2010, three convicted murderers escaped from the Kingman prison, which is operated by MTC. Deputy Mohave County attorney Victoria Stazio said that an accomplice threw a cutting tool over the perimeter fence, and the inmates used it to cut the fence.[4] Corrections officials have suggested that MTC's security procedures may be to blame for the escape.[3]
Two MTC employees resigned in the wake of the escape, a unit warden and a unit security chief.[5]
On September 20, the Arizona Department of Corrections released a report which stated that the escape went undetected for an unknown period of time because the security system between the perimeter fences, which should have detected the prisoners passing through, had been incorrectly installed and had not worked properly for the past 2.5 years.[6]
