Personal life
Jessica Miller was born and raised in Las Vegas to a carpenter father and showgirl mother. She also has an older sister. When she was younger, Miller used to be part of a girl gang who skipped school and caused trouble, much to her parents chagrin. She has also previously dated the lead singer of rock band Incubus, Brandon Boyd as well as the lead guitarist/vocalist of rock band System of a Down, Daron Malakian.
Professional career
Miller had never considered modeling, citing that she thought it was "dumb" in an interview once but upon the suggestion of her mother and sister, joined a modeling school (John Robert Powers Academy) at the age of 15. The following year, Miller was discovered by Corrie Caster, a scout from the prestigious Next modeling agency and signed with them. It was not until Miller landed a two year contract with Calvin Klein that her modeling career went into overdrive, where she became a huge star overnight within the modeling world. She went on later to appear in their ads for an additional year until she was replaced by Russian model, Natalia Vodianova.
From there, Miller spent the rest of her career appearing in advertisements for Adidas by Stella McCartney, A.P.C., Blumarine, Calvin Klein, Chloé, Chanel Cosmetics, David Yurman, Elie Tahari, Emporio Armani, Fendi, Gap, Givenchy, Guess, H&M, Helena Rubenstein, Jimmy Choo, Miss Sixty, Paul & Joe, Pepe Jeans, Swarovski, Tommy Hilfiger, Zara and more. She has graced the covers of magazines such as Vogue Italia, Vogue Paris, French L'Officiel, Numéro, i-D, Nylon, Muse and Harpers Bazaar and has appeared in editorials for fashion magazines worldwide as well as the Pirelli Calendar of 2003 and 2004. She has also appeared in commercials for Gap, Calvin Klein Watches (Touch) and a perfume commercial for CK One.
In 2003, Miller won the Model of the Year Award at the 2003 International Photographer Awards held in Beverly Hills, California where she was up against other models such as Kate Moss and Carmen Kass.
In 2005, Miller retired from the runway after walking the spring Marc by Marc Jacobs and Nicole Miller shows in New York but made a special appearance to walk for the Chanel resort show in Los Angeles in 2007. However, in 2009, Miller made a return to the catwalk walking the fall shows for Ohne Titel, Zac Posen, Ermanno Scervino, Fendi and Givenchy. During the recent F/W 10.11 season, Miller also walked for Alexander Wang, Altuzarra, Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam, Michael Kors, Willow, Ann Demeulemeester, Akris, Giles, Haider Ackermann, Hussein Chalayan, Loewe and Louis Vuitton.
Miller also serves as a muse for Dutch photographer duo Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, who have frequently shot with her for editorials and advertisements throughout her career. She is also known for her striking resemblance to Jane Birkin and the resemblance is acknowledged in an editorial Miller appeared in in French Vogue dedicated to Birkin.
She is friends with fellow models Hana Soukupova, Angela Lindvall, Magdalena Frackowiak, Helena Christensen, Carolyn Murphy, Isabeli Fontana, Erin Wasson, Daria Werbowy and Catherine McNeil.
Besides modeling, Miller has expressed interest in forming a rock band one day, as well as trying her hand in acting.
She recently announced that she has left Next Models whom she was with for a decade and is now signed with IMG Models.
