Jerome Starkey (journalist)

Jerome Starkey (journalist)

Jerome Starkey (born 27 June 1981) is a British war correspondent and investigative journalist based in Kabul, Afghanistan. His work on civilian casualties in The Times [1][2][3] has been decried by Nato's International Security Assistance Force[4][5] (ISAF) but widely praised by other journalists[6] and peace activists.[7]

His expose of a Special Forces night raid in Khataba, in eastern Afghanistan was nominated for two major journalism awards[8][9] and it forced the commander of the United States' Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), Vice Admiral William H. McRaven, to visit the victims' family and apologize[10] by offering to sacrifice a sheep at their door - an enactment of the ancient Pashtun ritual of Nanawatai. Jerome also worked on a successful Independent newspaper campaign[11] to free student journalist Sayed Pervez Kambaksh after he was sentenced to death for blasphemy. In November 2010 he was awarded the Frontline Club's annual award for excellence.[12]

He has been a vocal critic of military efforts to censor coverage of the War in Afghanistan[13] and claimed he was blacklisted.[14]

In October, 2010, Jerome was nearly killed during an embed with British troops in Helmand Province when an Improvised explosive device (IED) exploded less than 10metres in front of him.[15][16] The explosion killed Corporal David Barnsdale[17] and injured two others.

In 2011 Starkey won the Kurt Schork memorial prize. [18][19]
