The Frontline Club is a media club and registered British charity located at 13 Norfolk Place, near Paddington Station in West London. The club supports independent journalism. It has a restaurant, club and lodging for its members and is a leading centre in the UK for discussion and debate on the issues that shape the news industry.

“(Frontline) swaps the air kissing . It draws its membership from print journalists, photo-journalists, broadcasters and cameramen. Profits from the restaurant and efforts from Club members help the charitable work of The Frontline Club Charitable Trust. Its founder, Vaughan Smith, is a former freelance cameraman who previously ran Frontline News TV.

The Frontline club "uniquely combines eating, drinking and thinking". There are regular speaking and debating events together with film screenings and follow up discussions. A three-minute walk from Paddington Station, spread over three stripped wooden floors, it has a private clubroom for members, and a restaurant and forum space open to the public.

During the day, light streams through huge windows onto the exposed brickwork and photographic exhibitions in the loft-style restaurant and members’ room. At night the emphasis shifts to enlightenment through the Forum, with its screenings and discussions on media issues.

The Frontline Club is committed to social entrepreneurship - profits from the restaurant and efforts from Club members help the work of the Frontline Charitable Trust and its events programme.

Speakers have included Jeremy Bowen, Martin Bell, Russian dissident-businessman, Boris Berezovsky, the late former President of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto, Independent correspondent and author Robert Fisk, Newsnight presenter Jeremy Paxman and award-winnning journalist Christina Lamb.

History

The Frontline Club opened its doors in late 2003, soon after the Frontline News TV agency closed down. Frontline News TV was created by a group of freelance cameramen during the Romanian revolution. It went on to become a well-known player in the independent fringe of television newsgathering. The Club was founded by the surviving members of the original team of cameramen, and dedicated to the memory of friends and colleagues who lost their lives gathering news and images from the world’s conflict zones.

Training

[Frontline Video Training] http://www.frontlineclub.com/club_training.php offers a variety of courses - each one specifically developed to support the increasing demands on journalists and media workers - both newcomers and those more established - to become multi-skilled and technically savvy in today's media industry.

[Shooting] http://www.frontlineclub.com/club_training.php?id=4, [Editing with Final Cut Pro] http://www.frontlineclub.com/club_training.php?id=87, [Blogging and beyond] http://www.frontlineclub.com/club_training.php?id=373, [Lighting for Video] http://www.frontlineclub.com/club_training.php?id=374, and [Solo Video Journalism] http://www.frontlineclub.com/club_training.php?id=2 - a comprehensive course, entirely unique to Frontline, that teaches the various elements and skills needed to work alone in the field (combining shooting, editing, writing for video and publishing video online).

Frontline trainers are drawn from within our membership - all professionals with huge experience in the field. This ensures that our courses are taught by individuals who understand all the elements of programme making, whether it be newsgathering, documentary or feature filmmaking.

Classes are open to everyone, with or without journalistic experience. Our courses run throughout the year, with foundation and intermediate levels available in shooting, editing and Solo Video Journalism. Held in our dedicated training room at the Frontline Club in central London, every course is restricted to a maximum of eight participants.
