Gorigar River

Gorigar River

The Gorigar River originates from the Milam glacier, which in turn originates from Trisuli mountain. One kilometre downstream of the snout of the glacier, the Milam village is situated, hence the name of glacier. At the Milam, a river coming from the Tibet side, called 'GONKHA' joins Gorigar. Milam is situated on a large flat terrace. It is locally believed that the word 'GANGA' the name of holy river of Hindu, originating from gomukh (mouth of cow) as Bhagirathi river and passing through Haridwar, Allahabad and finally to Bay of Bengal, originated from the river called 'GONKHA' which in Tibet means 'MOUTH OF COW'. The Gorigar flows down through Burfu, Martoli, Bodyar, Suringhat, Bhadeli, Madkot, and finally joins with the Kali river coming from Dharchula side.

Entomology

In the local language gar means river and gori means, white, fair, because the water of Gorigar froths and contains white clay/sand and it looks white most of the time, hence its name is Gorigar.
