Development
The idea for a sequel had been conceptualized ever since the first movie was released, and a sequel was announced by Farhan Akhtar shortly after the release.[4] However, he was involved with other commitments while Shah Rukh Khan also gave his dates to the movies Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and My Name Is Khan. However in February 2010, Akhtar revealed that the script and locations for the movie have been finalized.[5]
Filming
Filming for Don 2 began from October 10, 2010 in Berlin, Germany. Shah Rukh Khan was asked to bulk up for the movie and to develop a six-pack.[6] In December 2010, shooting ended in Berlin and actors returned to India.[7] In February 2011, the actors flew to Malaysia for the second phase of the shoot which lasted for a month.[8] Filming in Malaysia ended on March 20, 2011. The film's final shooting was for a song in September, 2011.[9]
Soundtrack
Main article: Don 2: The Chase Continues (soundtrack)The film's original score and soundtrack has been composed by the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, who also composed the music for the first installment of the series, while lyrics are penned by Javed Akhtar. Before the release of the album, there were reports that a song named "Rehmat" from the film had been moving around the Internet. However, this was dismissed as being a rumor by the makers.[10] The album features ten tracks, and was released on 17 November 2011 by T-Series.
Marketing
Earlier, some working stills from the film featuring Shah Rukh Khan in long locks and a rough look were released on the internet. Later, Farhan Akhtar tweeted that the first theatrical trailer of the movie and its theatrical poster would be released along with his home production, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara on 15 July. Initially, a promo launch event was planned on 13 July in Mumbai, though it was canceled later due to the 2011 Mumbai bombings and the promo was released on the Internet. Subsequently, the first trailer was unveiled online and met with unanimous positive response, crossing 2 million views on Youtube in just 3 weeks and 1000+ likes within a day of its release. A second trailer was released online on October 24th. [11]
Since the quotes of Don (Shahrukh Khan) in Don had become very popular, producer Ritesh Sidhwani and producer-director Farhan Akhtar have decided to popularize the dialogues of its sequel, by releasing a series of 11 witty tongue-in-cheek dialogues of the Don from the sequel, one every Friday starting from 15th October right till the release of the film on 23rd December. These quotes are being simultaneously released across all media including television, print, radio, Internet, mobile platform and mobile application [12]
Release
The film would be a Christmas release and will release on 23 December 2011 in 3D. The film is also expected to be dubbed in Telugu and Tamil, which will be releasing along with the Hindi version.[13]
Controversy
A month before it's release, the film attracted media attention when "Nariman Films", the producer of the original Don made in 1978 had sent a legal notice to Red Chillies Entertainment, Reliance Entertainment and Excel Entertainment over the remaking of the old classic for the second time and title copyright infringement. According to the notice, "Nariman Films" had only given rights to Excel Entertainment, in perpetuity, for making Don - The Chase Begins Again, with the film being a sequel to it.[14] However, reacting to the legal notice, producers claimed that, "Whatever they had done is legal, so the claim is false and so are the charges. This is an absolutely new film and there is no question of a delay in releasing Don2."[15]
