"Domino" is a song by English singer-songwriter Jessie J, released as the first and currently only single from the platinum edition of her debut studio album, Who You Are.^[1] The song was released on 29 August 2011. It was written by with production also by Dr. Luke and Cirkut.^[2]

Background

The track was produced by Dr. Luke and Cirkut and premiered via the singer's official YouTube channel on Tuesday, 26 September. Jessie also launched a competition to accompany the track's debut, inviting fans to post their own covers of "Domino" for a chance to win tickets to a concert in either New York or London as well as a private meet and greet session. "Domino" serves as Jessie's second single in the United States, after the release of "Price Tag". It was also released as the fourth single in Australia and New Zealand, being released digitally on 29 August 2011. The single was released both digitally and physically on 4 November in Germany. Jessie originally teased "Domino"'s release in July 2011, posting a 21-second clip of the song via her Twitter page.

Critical reception

"Domino" has received very positive reviews from contemporary music critics; still the song has been compared a lot to songs from Katy Perry's Teenage Dream. Scott Shelter from PopCrush gave it three and a half stars out of five. He said that " it’s clear the track is different then her usual work, and unfortunately it sounds more derivative than innovative, however ‘Domino’ is catchy enough to potentially become Jessie J’s biggest American hit."^[3] Becky Bain from Idolator gave it a positive review, saying "Jessie sounds gorgeous on this track....but it still could welcome some unfavorable comparisons to Mrs. Perry."^[4] Jennifer Still from Digital Spy had posted the track on their website. ^[5]

Music video

A live montage accompanying the song premiered on 14 October 2011 on Jessie's VEVO channel. The video shows scenes of live shows, backstage footage and external performances.^[6] Jessie J announced that after she was finished physical therapy on her foot she would resume filming the video for Domino. On November 11th Jessie J announced on her official twitter that they had completed shooting the video.

Promotion

Jessie presented the song in the 2011 MTV VMAs. She also performed the song on The X Factor (U.S.) during the week 3 result show on November 10, 2011. ^[7]

Chart performance

"Domino" debuted at number twelve on the Australian Singles Chart on the issue date of 18 September 2011. The song later rose to number five on the chart.^[8] The song also debuted at number three on the New Zealand Singles Chart on the issue date of 12 September 2011.^[9] As the release in North America, it debuted at #96 and has so far peaked at number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number 25 on the Pop Songs chart.
