It is part of the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport network.

History
The line was built as part of the:
- Wishaw and Coltness Railway between Motherwell and Whifflet
- Glasgow and Garnkirk Railway between Whifflet and Gartsherrie South Junction
- Caledonian Main Line between Gartsherrie Junction and Cumbernauld.
Infrastructure
The line is electrified at 25 kV AC overhead from Motherwell to Gartsherrie Junction (north of Coatbridge Central). Passenger services are operated by First ScotRail on behalf of SPT.

Connections to services on other lines can be made at:
- Cumbernauld and Greenfaulds to the Cumbernauld Line between Falkirk Grahamston and Glasgow Queen Street
- Whifflet to the Whifflet Line to Glasgow Central
- Motherwell to the Argyle Line and services on the WCML, ECML, and North Berwick Line
2006 to 2011
There was an hourly service, usually operated by a Class 156 and calling at all stations. During the peak this was supplemented by Argyle Line services extended from Motherwell to Coatbridge Central.
From 2011
From 2011 there is an hourly service, usually operated by a Class 156; however, Class 158 are occasionally sighted.[1] This calls at all stations. During the peak this is supplemented by Argyle Line services extended from Motherwell to Coatbridge Central.
