Derrick LaPoint (born May 13, 1988 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin) is an American-born hockey player who currently plays defense for the Reading Royals of the ECHL.

Playing career

LaPoint grew up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and played for North High School in Eau Claire for four seasons, totaling 108 points. In four years, LaPoint helped lead the Huskies to sectional championships and state tournament berths.

LaPoint graduated from North High School with a 3.93 GPA and became part of the United States Hockey League playing for the Green Bay Gamblers in Green Bay, Wisconsin in 2006. He was named to the USHL All-Star Team and was one of the leading scorers among defenceman with 13 goals and 36 assists. He also won the team's Humanitarian Award for community service.[citation needed] Later, LaPoint moved to [North Dakota] play college hockey for the North Dakota Fighting Sioux. LaPoint played in 31 games as a freshman at North Dakota. He had two goals and five assists. His sophomore season was cut short by an injury.[citation needed] He had one goal and four assists in 32 games for the Sioux. LaPoint was selected in the fourth round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers. In the summer he also coaches at top dog hockey camp.
